What type of clients does Laura work with?Laura works with athletes and exercisers of all levels (professional athletes through to recreational exercisers), as well as coaches, parents and business professionals. Her clients are generally seeking to improve their performance in some way, but have recognised that their mindset is holding them back, or could be the key to further improvement. They often feel frustrated or disappointed with themselves, feeling they 'should' do better. Laura works alongside them to overcome these feelings and move forward positively.
-
What age clients does Laura work with?Laura's qualifications enable her to work with both adult and youth athletes (under 18) with parental/guardian consent. She holds an enhanced DBS check and has completed the NSPCC 'Child protection in Sport & Physical Activity' course. Currently however she focuses on working with adult athletes (aged 18 plus) and specialises in working with sports persons and exercisers aged 40 and beyond. She has a strong belief in the importance of supporting and encouraging participation and achievement in physical activity throughout our lives.

What types of issues can Laura help with?No two people, teams or issues are exactly the same! That is part of what Laura enjoys most about her work. She will get to know you, your personal challenges and what you want to achieve, before proposing a way forward that she believe will most benefit you. There are however some general areas that her clients may seek support with, these include: self-confidence, performance anxiety, fear of failure, focus and concentration, emotional control and set-back recovery. This is by no means an exhaustive list! If you are unsure whether Laura may be able to assist you, do reach out to her and take advantage of the free 20-minute introduction meeting to see if she may be the right person to help you.

What does a typical session look like?Laura does not believe in a 'one size fits all' formula and as such there is no strict 'typical' session. If after your introductory meeting, Laura and yourself feel it would be a good fit to work together, your first sessions are likely to focus on what is 'going on' for you and your goals for the sessions. Laura will seek to get a strong understanding of you as an individual and what 'success' (in terms of the sessions) would look like for you. This enables her to propose what she believes will be the most effective route forwards. Laura has a collaborative approach to her work, walking alongside you and ensuring you are 'on-board' with the path being taken. Laura draws on a number of approaches to inform her practice, her goal being to select the approach that she feels will best 'fit' the client and their presenting concern. The approaches include cognitive behaviour therapies (ACT, REBT), solution focused approaches and psychological skills training.

How long will it take to see results? This is a bit of a 'how long is a piece of string' question. Given that everybody's challenges and desired outcomes are individual, there is no single answer here. Some issues can be resolved fairly swiftly, even after only a few sessions, whereas others may require a longer term approach. Working with a psychologist should not be viewed as a 'quick fix' and it is important that you are committed to the process.
